*Who were Montagu & Meyrick?
The Wetherby Steeplechase Committee Ltd was formed in 1920. Founding director and later Chairman. Captain F. Osbaldeston Montagu OBE, MC, lived at nearby Ingmanthorpe Hall, an impressive country house that can be seen from the balconies of our hospitality suites. The current Racecourse site, once formed part of the grounds of Ingmanthorpe Hall.
Francis Rowland Meyrick was a renowned breeder of racehorses who became Wetherby's Clerk of the Course, a position he held for over 28 years. He was an inventive, industrious man and much of his hard work is evident at the Racecourse today. A race named in honour of his contributions is run each Boxing Day at Wetherby.
